Pakistan Railways to Begin ML-1 Modernisation from Karachi Port in July 2026

Islamabad: Pakistan Railways is set to launch the long-awaited modernisation of the Main Line-I (ML-1) project from Karachi Port starting July 2026, marking a major step toward upgrading the country’s rail infrastructure and freight capacity.

The announcement was made by Hanif Abbasi, Federal Minister for Railways, while briefing officials on Pakistan Railways’ future development roadmap.

According to the minister, the initial phase will focus on Karachi Port to improve freight handling, reduce transit time, and enhance rail connectivity with industrial and commercial zones. He said modernising tracks, signalling systems, and freight corridors under ML-1 is critical to reviving Pakistan’s railway network.

Abbasi noted that the project will significantly increase cargo movement through Pakistan Railways, helping lower transportation costs for exporters and strengthening Pakistan’s position as a regional trade and logistics hub.

Officials said ML-1 modernisation will also improve safety standards, enable higher train speeds, and increase operational efficiency across the rail network. The Karachi-first approach is intended to maximise economic returns by linking ports with inland markets.

The minister added that Pakistan Railways is aligning the project with long-term economic and infrastructure goals to support trade growth, industrial expansion, and sustainable transport development.
