Pakistan Approves Plan to Roll Out 3,000 EV Charging Stations Nationwide

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has approved a comprehensive roadmap to establish 3,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country as part of broader efforts to promote electric mobility and reduce emissions.

The plan was unveiled during a meeting between senior officials of the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA) and a leading private-sector conglomerate, where both sides reviewed progress and challenges related to EV charging infrastructure.

According to officials familiar with the discussions, the initiative is intended to address gaps in charging availability, which have remained concentrated in major urban centers, limiting wider EV adoption. The roadmap outlines phased deployment of charging stations nationwide, with an emphasis on regulatory compliance, grid connectivity, and coordination among relevant agencies.

Officials acknowledged that progress has been slowed by procedural hurdles, including customs clearances for charging equipment, approvals from power distribution companies, and delays in electricity connections. Regulatory authorities have pledged institutional support to streamline approvals and facilitate faster implementation.

The roadmap also includes plans to expand the charging network further in later phases, reflecting Pakistan’s long-term clean energy and transport goals. Authorities said improved charging availability is essential for encouraging private investment and supporting both personal and commercial electric vehicles.

Pakistan’s EV sector remains at an early stage, with limited public charging points currently operational. However, officials believe the approved roadmap could serve as a foundation for scaling electric transport nationwide and aligning the country with global clean mobility trends.
