ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has received a formal invitation to join a proposed Gaza Peace Board, the Foreign Office said on Monday, attributing the move to an initiative by Donald Trump.
Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andarabi said Shehbaz Sharif had been invited to participate in the board, which is part of a broader U.S. plan focused on Gaza.
He said Pakistan would continue to contribute to international efforts aimed at promoting peace and security in Gaza and would remain engaged with the global community to support a sustainable resolution.
The spokesperson reiterated Pakistan’s position that a lasting solution to the Palestinian issue should be in line with United Nations resolutions, adding that Islamabad would continue diplomatic engagement to support peace in the Middle East.
According to the Foreign Office, the White House has already announced the names of members for the Gaza Peace Board, which is intended to coordinate security arrangements, humanitarian assistance and reconstruction planning, as well as support institutional reforms within the Palestinian Authority.
Israeli officials have rejected the formation of the board, according to foreign media reports. A statement issued by the office of Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had not been consulted on the initiative.
The statement added that Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar was expected to raise the issue with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
