Dutch Diplomat Caught Smuggling Starlink Satellite Phones Into Iran, Russian Media Reports

TEHRAN: Russian state media, citing Iranian outlets, reported that a Dutch diplomat was stopped at Tehran’s international airport over alleged attempts to bring satellite communication equipment into Iran.

According to the reports, airport authorities inspected the diplomat’s luggage following a dispute regarding standard scanning procedures. Iranian sources cited by Russian agencies claimed that satellite internet hardware, including devices associated with the Starlink network, was found inside the baggage.

The reports further stated that the diplomat departed Iran without the confiscated items. A separate diplomatic representative reportedly attempted to retrieve the luggage but was unsuccessful before authorities proceeded with a formal inspection.

Iran has maintained restrictions on the import, distribution and use of certain satellite communication systems, including equipment linked to SpaceX’s Starlink service. Iranian authorities have previously classified unauthorized possession or operation of such devices as a violation of national regulations.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it had summoned Iran’s ambassador to the Netherlands to seek clarification regarding the seizure of diplomatic property at Tehran airport. The ministry expressed concern over the handling of the matter and said discussions were ongoing through diplomatic channels.

Iranian authorities have not issued an official statement beyond media reports. The incident remains under review.
