PTA mandates explicit user consent before activation of telecom packages

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has directed telecom operators to obtain explicit customer consent before activating any service package or value-added service (VAS).

In a regulatory instruction issued to mobile network operators, the authority said that no package, bundle or additional service may be activated without clear and verifiable approval from the subscriber.

According to the PTA, the move is aimed at strengthening consumer protection and ensuring transparency in billing practices. The directive requires operators to maintain proof of customer consent and make it available to the regulator upon request.

Officials said the new requirement applies to all prepaid and postpaid subscribers. Telecom companies have been instructed to implement technical safeguards to prevent unauthorized activations.

The regulator further stated that non-compliance may result in penalties under applicable telecom regulations.

The PTA said the measure is part of ongoing efforts to enhance consumer rights, improve service standards and promote fair practices in the telecommunications sector.

Mobile network operators have been asked to update their systems within the timeframe specified by the authority.
