Indian Tejas fighter excluded from Republic Day flypast after Dubai Airshow crash

NEW DELHI: An Indian Air Force Tejas fighter aircraft will not take part in the Republic Day flypast scheduled for January 26, following its crash during an aerial display at the Dubai Airshow, according to defence officials.

The lightweight combat aircraft was involved in an accident while performing manoeuvres at the international airshow, prompting a review of its operational status. The incident led to heightened scrutiny of safety and readiness considerations related to the platform.

Officials familiar with the planning process said the Tejas was not included in the final list of aircraft cleared for the Republic Day aerial display. They noted that aircraft selection for the annual flypast is based on multiple factors, including flight safety, technical readiness and operational requirements.

Defence authorities clarified that the decision reflects standard evaluation procedures rather than a permanent ban on the aircraft. Only platforms assessed as fully fit are selected for participation in national ceremonial events.

The Republic Day flypast is a key component of India’s annual celebrations marking the adoption of the Constitution, featuring a range of fighter jets, transport aircraft and helicopters operated by the armed forces.

The Tejas fighter, developed domestically as part of India’s defence modernisation programme, continues to undergo evaluation as investigators assess the circumstances surrounding the Dubai Airshow incident.

Officials said further decisions regarding the aircraft’s participation in future events would depend on the outcome of technical reviews and safety assessments.
