JAKARTA: Indonesia has received its first batch of Rafale fighter jets from France, officials confirmed, marking a key milestone in Jakarta’s efforts to modernise its air force.
A defence ministry spokesperson said three aircraft arrived on Friday and have been stationed at Roesmin Nurjadin Air Base in Pekanbaru, on Sumatra island. The jets are now operational with the Indonesian Air Force.
The delivery forms part of a broader agreement signed with France in 2022, under which Indonesia plans to acquire up to 42 Rafale fighters built by Dassault Aviation, alongside naval vessels including frigates and submarines. The deal is valued at around $8 billion.
Officials said three additional Rafale aircraft are expected later this year.
Indonesia has stepped up defence spending as it replaces ageing military hardware, with President Prabowo Subianto prioritising air and maritime capabilities. Jakarta has also explored other fighter options, including China’s J-10 and the US-made F-15EX.
Separately, Indonesia has signed a contract to purchase 48 KAAN fifth-generation fighter jets from Türkiye, while recent discussions were also held with Pakistan regarding potential cooperation on combat aircraft and drones.
The Rafale induction strengthens Indonesia’s regional air power as Southeast Asia’s largest economy continues to expand its defence partnerships.
