Pakistan Bans General Import of Chloroform Over Health and Safety Concerns

ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has banned the general import of chloroform, citing growing health risks and concerns over its unregulated use. The decision aims to strengthen public safety measures and tighten oversight of hazardous chemical substances.

Under the revised import regulations, chloroform will now be permitted only for specific pharmaceutical and medical applications. Authorized entities will be required to obtain regulatory approval before importing the chemical, ensuring its use remains limited and controlled.

Officials stated that unrestricted imports of chloroform posed potential dangers due to its misuse and adverse health effects. The move reflects Pakistan’s broader effort to align chemical regulations with international safety standards while prioritizing public health protection.

The restriction does not affect essential medical and pharmaceutical usage, which will continue under strict regulatory supervision.
