KARACHI: Pakistan has launched its second locally developed earth observation satellite, EO-2, from China’s Yangjiang Seashore Launch Center, according to the national space agency SUPARCO.
The satellite was placed into orbit as part of Pakistan’s ongoing program to expand domestic remote-sensing and geospatial capabilities.
SUPARCO said EO-2 will strengthen national earth-imaging continuity and provide updated data for multiple civilian and administrative sectors.
Officials stated the satellite is designed to support disaster assessment, urban planning, agricultural monitoring and environmental management. The system will also assist federal and provincial authorities in infrastructure planning and resource utilization.
The agency added that the mission reflects Pakistan’s expanding satellite development capacity and broader objective of enhancing technological self-reliance in space-based observation.
Pakistan has increased technical cooperation with China in recent years in satellite launches and related space projects aimed at improving access to geospatial information.
SUPARCO said EO-2 data will particularly help authorities in areas prone to flooding, climate stress and rapid urban growth by improving the availability and accuracy of imagery.
