Trump warns Iran of consequences if talks fail

WASHINGTON: Donald Trump on Monday said negotiations with Iran were continuing but warned that failure to reach an agreement would lead to consequences.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said Washington was seeking a diplomatic outcome but stressed that the United States was prepared to respond if talks did not produce results.

The US president also confirmed that his envoy Steve Witkoff held discussions with Iran’s foreign minister on Friday, describing the engagement as part of broader efforts to de-escalate tensions.

Trump added that a large US naval deployment was moving toward the region, saying it exceeded previous operations linked to Venezuela, without providing operational details.

Commenting on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump said efforts toward a ceasefire were under way and that he expected positive developments soon.

He also dismissed any connection to the Epstein case and announced plans to establish a strategic reserve of critical minerals to support American industries.

Diplomatic activity between Washington and Tehran has increased in recent weeks, with officials on both sides signaling openness to dialogue, though major differences remain.
