KARACHI: Pakistan has announced plans to develop a dedicated seafood export zone worth $80 million over an area of 100 acres in Karachi, as part of efforts to expand exports and modernize the country’s fisheries sector.
According to official information, the project will focus on improving seafood processing, cold storage, packaging, and export logistics to meet international quality and hygiene standards.
Officials said the export zone is expected to support value addition in seafood products, enhance competitiveness in global markets, and attract private investment into the fisheries industry.
The planned facility will include modern infrastructure for processing and handling seafood, aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and increasing export capacity. Authorities believe the project will help Pakistan tap into high-demand markets in the Middle East, Europe, and East Asia.
Industry sources said Karachi was selected due to its strategic coastal location, proximity to major fishing harbors, and existing port infrastructure, making it ideal for large-scale seafood exports.
The seafood export zone is also expected to create employment opportunities and contribute to broader economic activity in the coastal region, while strengthening Pakistan’s position in the global seafood trade.
