Pakistan cites self-defence after May clashes with India UN

NEW YORK: Pakistan has told the United Nations Security Council that it acted in self-defence after what it described as unprovoked military actions by India in May 2025, citing Article 51 of the UN Charter.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, made the remarks during a Security Council debate on international peace and security.

He said unilateral actions outside the framework of the UN Charter undermine collective security and weaken the credibility of multilateral institutions.

Ambassador Asim stated that India carried out military aggression in May, calling it a clear violation of international law and Pakistan’s sovereignty.

He added that Pakistan responded in accordance with its inherent right of self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

The envoy warned against the emergence of any “new normal” based on coercion or exceptions, saying such approaches were unacceptable.

He also urged the Security Council to develop stronger mechanisms to monitor implementation of its resolutions and called for more structured engagement between the Council and the International Court of Justice.
