WASHINGTON: US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Pentagon is prepared to carry out President Donald Trump’s directives regarding Iran, warning Tehran against moving closer to nuclear weapons.
Speaking to reporters, Hegseth said Iran had earlier opportunities to reach an agreement and should not have expanded its nuclear capabilities. He added that the US Department of Defense remains ready to use “all available options” if required.
“The Pentagon is prepared to act according to the president’s expectations,” Hegseth said, stressing that any decision by President Trump would be fully supported by the US military.
His remarks come as the United States deploys a naval strike group to the Middle East, following renewed warnings from President Trump, who said a powerful fleet was moving toward the region with a clear operational purpose.
In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran’s armed forces remain on high alert, adding that Tehran would respond decisively to any aggression.
Regional tensions have intensified amid concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme and increased US military presence, raising fears of a broader escalation.
