Trump says US fleet heading toward Iran hopes force not needed

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that American naval assets have been deployed toward Iran, but stressed that he hopes military action will not be required.

Speaking to reporters in Washington, Trump said several large and heavily equipped US vessels are currently moving in Iran’s direction. He added that Washington still prefers diplomacy and plans further engagement with Tehran.

“We are sending powerful ships, but I hope we won’t have to use them,” Trump said, noting that talks with Iran have taken place previously and could continue.

The US president also cautioned allies about expanding commercial ties with China, warning that deeper trade engagement poses risks, particularly for Britain and Canada.

“Doing business with China carries serious consequences,” Trump said, urging partner countries to remain vigilant over Beijing’s growing economic influence.

Commenting on Cuba, Trump said he did not believe the current government would remain in power over the long term.

His remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following increased US military deployments and warnings from Iranian officials that Tehran is prepared to respond to any aggression.
