United States approves $9 billion Patriot missile sale to Saudi Arabia

WASHINGTON: The United States has approved a proposed $9 billion sale of Patriot air defense missiles and related equipment to Saudi Arabia, according to officials familiar with the decision.

The package includes advanced interceptor missiles, launch systems and support equipment aimed at strengthening Saudi Arabia’s air and missile defense capabilities.

A spokesperson for the Pentagon confirmed that the deal covers upgraded missile systems along with associated logistics and technical support. The sale is subject to final congressional notification procedures.

The approval comes as Washington continues large-scale defense cooperation with regional partners. Earlier, the US also cleared a separate military package for Israel valued at about $6.5 billion, which included Apache helicopters, light tactical vehicles and additional armored equipment.

US officials said the Saudi deal is intended to enhance regional security and help protect critical infrastructure against aerial threats.

Defense analysts note that Patriot systems play a central role in Gulf air defense networks amid ongoing instability across the Middle East.

The transaction will proceed through standard foreign military sales channels once formal documentation is completed.
