DHAKA: Preliminary and unofficial results from Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary election show the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allied parties securing a clear majority in the national assembly.
According to early vote counts reported by local media, the BNP-led alliance has won around 209 seats out of 299 contested constituencies. The results remain subject to official confirmation by the Election Commission.
Party leader Tarique Rahman, widely viewed as the coalition’s prime ministerial candidate, was reported elected from Dhaka and Bogura constituencies. His party alone secured more than 150 seats based on available tallies.
Allied groups, including Jamaat-e-Islami and smaller partners, gained additional representation in parliament. A newly formed political group also won a limited number of seats as part of the alliance arrangement.
In his first remarks after the vote, Rahman said restoring law and order and ensuring public safety would be the government’s immediate priorities. He urged supporters to remain peaceful and avoid victory rallies.
Meanwhile, representatives of rival parties raised concerns over delays in some constituencies and said they would respond after official results are announced.
Alongside the parliamentary vote, authorities conducted a nationwide referendum on proposed constitutional reforms. Early figures indicate approximately 73 percent of voters supported the reform proposals.
Election authorities have not yet released final consolidated results.
