Arif Habib consortium moves to acquire remaining stake in PIA

ISLAMABAD: A consortium led by the Arif Habib Group is seeking to obtain complete ownership of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) by acquiring the government’s remaining shareholding, according to officials familiar with the development.

The group had earlier obtained a 75 percent stake in the national carrier as part of the privatisation process. It now intends to purchase the remaining shares to gain full operational control and implement management restructuring.

Officials said the move would allow the airline to function as a fully private entity, enabling independent decision-making on administration, operations and financial planning.

The consortium plans to introduce management reforms, improve operational efficiency and upgrade services as part of its restructuring strategy.

Government authorities have provided a limited timeframe for the purchase of the remaining shares, after which ownership transfer procedures will be completed subject to regulatory approvals.

PIA has faced persistent financial challenges for years, and the privatisation effort is aimed at restoring commercial viability through private sector management and investment.
