US weighs leadership-level strikes as tensions with Iran escalate

WASHINGTON: The United States is assessing options that could include targeting senior Iranian leadership if a potential military confrontation occurs, according to international media reports, as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to rise.

Security concerns have intensified after increased military deployments in the Middle East. Reports indicate a US aircraft carrier strike group has moved into the Mediterranean Sea, while additional air assets have been positioned at regional bases.

Officials familiar with the situation said contingency planning includes a range of military scenarios. These reportedly extend beyond conventional infrastructure targets and could involve leadership-level command structures if hostilities escalate.

Separately, international media reported a heightened air presence at multiple regional airbases, including facilities in the Levant region. The deployments are described as precautionary measures aimed at strengthening deterrence and operational readiness.

Iranian leadership has responded by stating the country is prepared for both diplomatic engagement and military defence. Tehran reiterated that it would not accept external pressure and warned that any attack would receive a response.

The developments follow recent statements from Washington urging Tehran to return to negotiations within a limited timeframe, further fueling geopolitical uncertainty in the region.

Analysts say the situation remains fluid, with diplomatic channels still open but military preparedness increasing on both sides.
