Pakistan vows decisive response after cross-border strikes in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s government has pledged a firm response to militant attacks following cross-border operations targeting armed groups inside Afghanistan.

Speaking during a Senate session, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said Pakistan would not remain passive in the face of continued violence. He stated that recent military actions were carried out after repeated warnings to Afghan authorities regarding cross-border infiltration.

According to the minister, Pakistani forces conducted intelligence-based strikes in three Afghan provinces. He said the operations targeted locations allegedly linked to groups responsible for recent attacks in Islamabad, Bannu and Bajaur.

Chaudhry told lawmakers that Pakistan had consistently urged the Afghan interim administration to prevent militant organisations from using its territory against Pakistan. He added that the government had offered cooperation mechanisms but expected guarantees against cross-border interference.

The minister said the operations were precise and based on verified intelligence assessments. Initial reports indicated significant militant casualties, though independent confirmation was not immediately available.

He reiterated that Pakistan seeks peace and regional stability but will prioritise national security. “Pakistan desires stability in the region, but there will be no compromise on sovereignty,” he told the Senate.

Officials said the strikes were part of a broader counterterrorism response following a series of attacks blamed on outlawed militant groups operating from across the border.
