Bangladesh rules out travel to India for T20 World Cup, cites security concerns

DHAKA: Bangladesh has reaffirmed its decision not to send its national team to India for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, citing security concerns and stating that the stance will not be reversed, officials said on Wednesday.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said the decision was taken after consultations between government officials and senior players, and reflects concerns raised over player safety during the tournament scheduled to be hosted in India.

Bangladesh’s adviser for youth and sports, Dr Asif Nazrul, said following a meeting with national team players that the government supported the board’s position. He added that Bangladesh remained keen to participate in the World Cup but believed the current security environment in India posed risks that had not been adequately addressed.

“We want to play the World Cup, but the safety of our players is a priority,” Nazrul said. “We hope the ICC will take our concerns seriously and consider alternative arrangements.”

Officials said Bangladesh had proposed a hybrid or neutral venue model, suggesting Sri Lanka as a possible host location for its matches. They added that the players had been taken into confidence and were aligned with the board’s position.

BCB President Aminul Islam said the board would continue engaging with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to seek a resolution. “This is our right,” he said. “We will not travel to India under the current circumstances and will pursue the matter with the ICC.”

Government and cricket board officials are expected to address the media later to further outline Bangladesh’s position and next steps.
