China Calls Pakistan’s Progress Shared Growth as CPEC Phase II Begins

ISLAMABAD: China on Thursday reaffirmed its long-term development partnership with Pakistan, announcing the launch of the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) following the successful completion of its initial stage.

Speaking to media in Islamabad, Sun Haiyan, Vice Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China, said that China views Pakistan’s economic progress as closely linked with its own development.

She stated that while Phase I of CPEC focused on infrastructure and energy projects, Phase II will place greater emphasis on industrial cooperation, special economic zones, job creation, and people-centric initiatives. She described the next phase as more complex but said both sides are actively working to ensure its success.

The Chinese vice minister noted that China has already contributed to the development of industrial parks, educational institutions, and social sector projects in Pakistan, with more initiatives currently under way. She added that tens of thousands of Pakistani students are pursuing higher education in China on scholarships, while health-sector cooperation is also expanding through hospital projects, medical equipment support, and training programs for healthcare professionals.

Highlighting bilateral ties, Sun said Pakistan and China are marking 75 years of diplomatic relations this year, adding that consultations with Pakistan’s political leadership are ongoing to further elevate the strategic partnership.

She also referenced China’s recent economic performance, noting sustained growth, poverty reduction efforts, and plans to open its markets further, offering greater access to partner countries including Pakistan.
