Islamabad airport becomes Pakistan’s first fully digital and cashless airport

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad International Airport has been transformed into Pakistan’s first fully digital and cashless airport, following the rollout of a nationwide smart payments initiative led by the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) in collaboration with Zindigi, the digital banking platform powered by JS Bank.

Under the initiative, passengers can now make digital payments across the airport using interoperable Raast QR codes through any mobile banking application. The system covers retail outlets, service counters and commercial facilities operating within the airport premises.

Officials said the project is part of broader efforts to modernise public infrastructure and reduce reliance on cash transactions, while improving transparency and operational efficiency.

According to PAA officials, the digital rollout positions Islamabad International Airport as a model for future smart airports across the country. The project is designed to minimise revenue leakages, streamline payment processes and enhance the overall passenger experience.

Zindigi representatives said the initiative reflects growing cooperation between financial technology providers and public institutions to support Pakistan’s transition toward a digital economy.

The development aligns with the government’s wider push to promote digital payments, expand the use of Raast infrastructure and modernise key transport and civic facilities through technology-driven solutions.
