Islamabad intensifies vehicle checks as 166,000 cars receive electronic tags

ISLAMABAD: Authorities in the federal capital have stepped up enforcement against vehicles operating without mandatory electronic tags, with more than 166,000 cars now registered under the system, officials said.

The electronic tagging initiative was introduced by the Islamabad Capital Territory administration as part of wider efforts to strengthen security, improve traffic regulation and enhance digital surveillance across the city.

Under the system, vehicles are fitted with electronic tags that can be scanned automatically at checkpoints installed at major entry and exit points, reducing the need for manual inspections. Vehicles already equipped with motorway-issued M-Tags are exempt from the requirement.

According to data released by the Islamabad Excise Department, a total of 166,888 vehicles have been issued electronic tags so far, including more than 3,100 registrations in the past 24 hours.

Officials said scanners installed at multiple checkpoints across Islamabad are fully operational and are being used to stop vehicles that remain unregistered, as enforcement teams continue citywide inspections.

To facilitate compliance, authorities have expanded registration facilities and extended operating hours. Director General Excise Irfan Memon said M-Tag installation is available at 17 locations, with select centers operating beyond standard working hours.

Facilities at 26 Number Chungi and 18 Meel are providing round-the-clock services, while counters at Kachnar Park and F-9 Park remain open until midnight to accommodate motorists.

The enforcement drive forms part of broader “safe city” initiatives aimed at integrating traffic management, emergency response and security monitoring through technology. Last month, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reviewed Islamabad’s surveillance infrastructure and emphasized the need for modern monitoring systems.

Authorities have urged motorists to obtain electronic tags promptly to avoid delays or penalties, saying enforcement will continue until full compliance is achieved across the capital.
