Overseas Pakistanis Power the Economy with $38bn in Annual Remittances

Pakistan has highlighted the critical contribution of its overseas workforce as the country observed International Migrants Day, drawing attention to the $38 billion in annual remittances that continue to play a stabilising role in the national economy.

Officials described overseas Pakistanis as a cornerstone of economic resilience, noting that remittance inflows help strengthen foreign exchange reserves, support household incomes, and cushion the economy during periods of financial stress. The steady flow of funds has remained a key support for consumption and balance-of-payments stability.

Beyond their financial impact, migrant workers were acknowledged for their role in enhancing Pakistan’s global economic linkages and supporting social development back home. Policymakers reiterated the need to improve facilitation, reduce transaction costs, and expand formal remittance channels to sustain inflows.

The recognition comes at a time when Pakistan is seeking long-term economic stability through structural reforms, export growth, and stronger engagement with its diaspora.
