ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Bangladesh are considering the launch of a ferry service and the establishment of a direct shipping link to strengthen trade and tourism ties, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting in Islamabad between Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Iqbal Hussain Khan.
According to the statement, both sides reviewed avenues to enhance maritime cooperation and improve connectivity between the two countries.
Chaudhry said improved sea links could facilitate commercial exchange and promote tourism activity. He noted that a dedicated ferry route and direct shipping connection would help streamline cargo movement and reduce transit time.
The minister added that expanding maritime connectivity could support broader economic engagement and provide additional opportunities for bilateral trade.
The two officials reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic collaboration and exploring practical steps to improve transportation and logistics infrastructure.
Pakistan and Bangladesh were part of a single state until 1971. Diplomatic and economic engagement has fluctuated over the decades but has shown renewed activity in recent months.
Earlier this year, direct flights between the two countries resumed after a prolonged suspension, marking a step toward enhanced connectivity.
Officials said discussions on maritime cooperation would continue through diplomatic and technical channels.
