ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates have taken steps toward introducing a pre-immigration clearance mechanism for UAE-bound passengers, officials said, following discussions on passenger facilitation and border management.
The matter was discussed during a meeting between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and a UAE delegation led by Ahmed bin Lahej Al-Falasi, Director General of Customs and Port Security, according to officials familiar with the talks.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed a proposed framework under which certain immigration and related clearance procedures for UAE-bound passengers could be completed prior to departure from Pakistan.
Officials said the two sides expressed intent to formalize the arrangement through an agreement after technical and procedural aspects are finalized. The proposal is aimed at reducing processing time for passengers upon arrival in the UAE.
Mohsin Naqvi said the initiative is being considered for launch on a pilot basis from Karachi, with the possibility of gradual expansion to other locations subject to the outcome of the pilot phase.
UAE officials described the proposal as beneficial for travelers of both countries and conveyed readiness to continue coordination with Pakistani authorities to advance the process.
No timeline for signing or implementation has been announced.
