Pakistan Unveils 14,590-Acre Port Qasim Industrial Mega Project

Karachi: The federal government has launched a comprehensive master plan to establish a large-scale industrial complex at Port Qasim, covering an area of 14,590 acres, in a move aimed at expanding Pakistan’s industrial base and enhancing export capacity.

The initiative was unveiled by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry while chairing a high-level meeting in Karachi to outline the vision and phased development strategy of the Port Qasim Industrial Complex, according to an official briefing.

Addressing the meeting, the minister said the project has been designed to integrate industrial growth with modern logistics infrastructure, positioning Port Qasim as a globally competitive industrial and maritime hub. He noted that the plan aligns with Pakistan’s long-term goals of industrialisation, trade expansion, and development of the blue economy.

Chaudhry stated that the climate-resilient industrial complex is expected to generate substantial economic value over the next two decades by attracting investment, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening export-oriented manufacturing. He added that sustainability measures have been embedded in the planning process to mitigate environmental risks and improve long-term investor confidence.

According to the master plan, the industrial complex will be developed across three major zones. The North Western Zone, spanning 3,061 acres, has been designated for diversified industrial activity and value-added manufacturing linked to port operations. The Eastern Zone, the largest section at 7,273 acres, will serve as the core industrial area, accommodating heavy industries, export-driven units, and logistics facilities.

The South Western Zone, covering 2,258 acres, has been allocated for specialised industrial and commercial use, while nearly 1,997 acres of low-lying land will be developed gradually under strict environmental safeguards to ensure sustainable land utilisation.

Highlighting existing capacity, the minister said Port Qasim currently hosts more than 800 operational industrial units, with dozens of additional facilities under construction, reflecting sustained investor interest. He emphasised that Port Qasim has evolved into a dynamic industrial ecosystem rather than remaining solely a maritime facility.

The government views the project as a strategic step toward strengthening Pakistan’s role as a regional trade and industrial centre, while ensuring continuity, regulatory stability, and long-term economic resilience.
