COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket has formally asked the Pakistan Cricket Board to review Pakistan’s decision to skip its high-profile match against India at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, citing major financial and tourism losses.
According to Sri Lankan media reports, Sri Lanka Cricket sent a letter to the PCB urging a reconsideration of the boycott, warning that the cancellation of the February 15 fixture in Colombo would significantly impact ticket sales, broadcasting revenue and local tourism.
Sri Lanka Cricket said extensive preparations had already been completed for the match, including stadium readiness and ticket distribution, adding that hotel bookings by visiting fans had begun to fall following Pakistan’s announcement.
Officials noted that the India-Pakistan encounter was expected to be one of the tournament’s biggest revenue drivers and that non-participation could have long-term consequences for host boards.
Sri Lankan media also reported that Colombo had assured Pakistan of full security arrangements for all matches.
Sources said other cricket boards have also encouraged Pakistan to reconsider its position in the broader interest of the tournament.
The development follows the Pakistani government’s decision barring the national team from playing India, a move linked to wider political considerations.
Earlier this week, Indian media reported that the International Cricket Council was exploring back-channel options to persuade Pakistan to review its stance.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to begin on February 7, with matches hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Pakistan is due to play all its group fixtures in Colombo.
