US approves $1.3bn financing for Pakistan’s Reko Diq mining project

ISLAMABAD: The United States has approved $1.3 billion in financing for Pakistan’s Reko Diq mining project, marking a major step in strengthening cooperation on critical minerals and supply chains.

The funding will be provided by the US Export-Import Bank under Washington’s Global Infrastructure and Investment framework, officials said.

The decision was discussed during a high-level meeting in Washington focused on securing critical mineral supply routes, developing alternative sourcing channels, and improving reliable transport and logistics networks.

Officials said the financing aims to support Pakistan’s flagship copper-gold project in Balochistan while helping diversify global mineral supply chains.

The Reko Diq project is jointly being developed by Pakistan’s federal and Balochistan governments in partnership with international mining firm Barrick Gold.

The initiative is seen as part of broader efforts by both countries to expand economic engagement and strengthen cooperation in strategic sectors, including mining, infrastructure and trade.
