Iran warns US of unprecedented response if attacked

NEW YORK: Iran has warned the United States that any military action would be met with an unprecedented response, escalating rhetoric as tensions grow over regional security and nuclear diplomacy.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Iran’s mission to the United Nations said Tehran remains open to dialogue based on mutual respect and national interests, but stressed it would defend itself if threatened.

“If pressure is imposed, Iran will respond in a manner never seen before,” the mission said in a post on X.

The statement also referred to past US military engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying those conflicts cost Washington trillions of dollars and thousands of troops.

The warning followed remarks by US President Donald Trump, who said a large naval force was moving toward the region, led by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln. Trump said the deployment was intended to deter aggression and ensure rapid operational readiness if required.

He added that Washington hopes Iran will return to negotiations and engage in talks aimed at reaching a fair agreement that prevents nuclear weapons development.

Iranian officials reiterated that Tehran supports a transparent nuclear framework that safeguards its rights while rejecting what it described as coercive pressure.

The exchange comes amid renewed uncertainty over Middle East stability and stalled diplomatic efforts on Iran’s nuclear programme.
