Pakistan is expected to take a major step forward in its airpower modernisation with the planned induction of China’s J-35E stealth fighter jet, potentially between 2026 and 2027. The move would mark Pakistan’s formal entry into the fifth-generation fighter aircraft category, placing it among a limited group of nations operating stealth-capable combat jets.
The J-35E is a carrier-capable, low-observable multirole fighter designed to feature advanced stealth shaping, modern avionics, and network-centric warfare capabilities. Its induction would represent a significant technological leap for the Pakistan Air Force, particularly in terms of survivability, sensor fusion, and beyond-visual-range combat effectiveness.
Defence analysts note that the potential acquisition aligns with Pakistan’s long-term strategy to maintain credible airpower in an increasingly competitive regional environment. The aircraft is expected to complement existing platforms rather than replace them, creating a layered force structure that integrates fourth-generation and fifth-generation capabilities.
While official details regarding numbers and timelines remain limited, the anticipated induction reflects deepening defence cooperation between Pakistan and China, particularly in advanced aerospace technologies. If realised, the J-35E would provide Pakistan with enhanced deterrence, improved situational awareness, and greater operational flexibility in future air combat scenarios.
