DUBAI: The International Cricket Council has acknowledged Pakistan’s decision not to play its scheduled ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match against India, saying it is awaiting formal communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the ICC said it had taken note of the Pakistani government’s position regarding participation in the 2026 tournament, adding that official confirmation from the PCB is still pending.
The governing body stressed that ICC tournaments are based on fairness, integrity and equal competition, and that all qualified teams are expected to follow the approved match schedule.
“While the ICC respects the role of governments in national matters, this position does not align with the fundamental principles of global sporting events,” the council said.
The ICC added that its priority remains the successful staging of the Men’s T20 World Cup and urged all member boards to work toward a mutually acceptable solution that protects the interests of players, fans and stakeholders.
Pakistan earlier confirmed it would take part in the tournament but would not play its February 15 fixture against India.
The decision followed a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, during which Pakistan’s participation in the World Cup was reviewed.
Government sources said the move was taken as a protest over what they described as unequal treatment in regional cricket matters. The PCB has informed relevant stakeholders of the government’s position.
Further clarification on Pakistan’s revised match arrangements is expected in the coming days.
