Illegal Indian migration raises global security concerns after 85,000 US arrests

WASHINGTON: Rising illegal immigration from India is emerging as a growing global security concern after US authorities detained more than 85,000 Indian nationals at the southern border in 2024, according to official data from US Customs and Border Protection.

The figures show that 85,119 Indian citizens were apprehended while attempting to enter the United States illegally in 2024. In 2025 so far, another 23,830 Indians have already been detained at border crossings, highlighting a continuing upward trend.

Security analysts say many migrants are using organised smuggling routes and forged educational credentials to facilitate travel, raising alarms among international law enforcement agencies.

Foreign media reports indicate that economic pressures and limited legal migration pathways have pushed thousands of Indian citizens toward irregular routes in search of employment and stability abroad.

Several global security bodies have warned that illegal migration networks linked to document fraud, human trafficking and organised crime pose increasing risks to international safety.

US officials say enforcement agencies are stepping up screening procedures to counter fake degrees, financial fraud and coordinated smuggling operations connected to cross-border migration.

Border authorities added that cooperation with partner countries is being expanded to disrupt trafficking networks and prevent misuse of student and work visa channels.
