Pakistan orders 100% screening after Nipah cases in India

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has issued a nationwide health advisory and ordered 100% screening of all incoming and transit passengers following reports of Nipah virus cases in India, officials said.

The Ministry of National Health Services directed authorities at airports, seaports and land borders to intensify checks, including thermal screening and medical assessments for every traveller.

Health officials said passengers must provide a complete 21-day travel history, while those arriving from high-risk areas will be kept under special observation. Anyone showing suspected symptoms will be immediately isolated.

The advisory also instructs provincial governments to designate hospitals or infectious disease units for potential Nipah patients and keep rapid response teams and emergency operation centres on alert.

According to ministry officials, five Nipah cases have been reported in India’s West Bengal state. No confirmed cases have been detected in Pakistan so far.

Authorities warned that there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for Nipah virus, stressing that early surveillance and preparedness remain critical to prevent cross-border transmission.
