Pakistan ranks third among world’s top rice exporters as basmati shipments surge

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has become the world’s third-largest rice exporter, marking a major milestone for the country’s agricultural and export sectors, following a strong surge in basmati rice shipments during December.

Trade data shows that Pakistan’s rice exports recorded a month-on-month increase of around 14% in December, with basmati rice exports rising by more than 50%, significantly boosting overall volumes.

In December alone, Pakistan exported approximately 489,000 tonnes of rice to international markets, surpassing Vietnam, which shipped around 387,000 tonnes during the same period. The increase lifted Pakistan to third place in the global rice export rankings at the start of 2026.

Exporters said the growth was supported by strong demand for Pakistani basmati rice, improved supply conditions, and steady buying from traditional markets.

Pakistan’s largest rice export destinations during the month included the United Arab Emirates, China, Tanzania, Kenya, and Côte d’Ivoire, reflecting diversified demand across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Industry officials say the export momentum highlights the importance of value-added agricultural exports in supporting Pakistan’s foreign exchange earnings and strengthening its position in global food markets.
