Pakistan’s JF-17 Fighter Draws Strong Interest at Riyadh Defense Exhibition

RIYADH: Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder fighter jet has generated strong interest from international delegations at the World Defense Exhibition in Riyadh, officials and state media said.

The exhibition has brought together defense officials, military representatives, and arms manufacturers from dozens of countries, providing a platform for showcasing military hardware and exploring export opportunities.

According to Pakistan Television, the JF-17 Thunder attracted attention from visitors and defense experts during the event, where fighter aircraft from several countries, including the United States and Saudi Arabia, were also on display.

Pakistan is using the exhibition to promote defense exports, with officials indicating that discussions are underway with multiple countries regarding the JF-17 as well as other defense systems, including training aircraft, drones, and weapons.

Media reports have previously indicated that talks are at various stages with several countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, though no formal agreements were announced at the event.

Interest in the JF-17 has increased following its operational use during the Pakistan-India military confrontation in May 2025, which Pakistani officials say highlighted the aircraft’s operational capability.

The JF-17 Thunder, jointly developed by Pakistan and China, is positioned by Islamabad as a cost-effective multirole combat aircraft for countries seeking alternatives to more expensive Western platforms. The aircraft is already in service with multiple foreign air forces.

Separately, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif met Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman on the sidelines of the exhibition, according to Radio Pakistan. The meeting focused on defense cooperation and the significance of international defense exhibitions in strengthening regional partnerships.
