Morocco engages Pakistan on JF-17 jets, defence hardware talks widen

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has held preliminary defence-related discussions with Morocco as part of broader international interest in its locally produced military aircraft and weapons systems, according to officials familiar with the matter.

Industry and government sources say Pakistan’s defence manufacturing sector has seen rising inquiries following the operational deployment of its fighter jets, drones and missile systems in recent regional hostilities. The interest includes the JF-17 Thunder fighter jet, jointly developed with China, as well as training aircraft, unmanned systems and associated weapons.

Officials said Pakistan is currently engaged in defence discussions with multiple countries across Africa, the Middle East and Asia, though no binding agreements have been announced. Several of the talks are described as exploratory and subject to regulatory approvals and geopolitical considerations.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence Production has acknowledged international interest in domestically manufactured equipment but has not disclosed commercial details. Officials note that defence exports are handled under strict confidentiality frameworks and progress varies by country.

Analysts attribute the growing attention to supply-chain disruptions affecting traditional arms suppliers, alongside competitive pricing and operational performance of Pakistani platforms. The JF-17, in particular, is viewed as a cost-effective alternative for countries seeking modern air capabilities without high acquisition costs.

Defence officials caution that discussions do not necessarily translate into finalized contracts, citing international pressure, financing constraints and licensing requirements as key variables.

Pakistan has gradually expanded its defence export footprint in recent years, positioning itself as a supplier of aircraft, munitions and training solutions to developing markets.
